Contemporary/Modern reflects the 20th century, with "contemporary" emphasizing the last half of the century. The rooms have a clean and straightforward feel. It is a look which often appeals to designers and architects because of the underlying simplicity. In such contemporary home, one should feel like, "This is today."

Decorating Technique

Modern emphasizes new materials and technology such as fiberglass, plastic, Lucite, gent plywood and others. This furniture may be minimalist, organic, high tech and even futuristic. Consider geometric shapes and chrome may be prevalent. And wall colors are light and highly reflective with white ceilings.

Contemporary design uses a great deal of color and texture. But Modern design uses less texture and is more about form and artistic impression rather than function. Also contemporary design uses softer lines than pure Modern, and feature clean lines, sculptural furnishings, art, neutral elements and bold color.
