Designing Ambiance
Egyptian styling evokes a sense of ancient mystique, characterized by a once great civilization rooted by Gods and Goddesses. You should feel the grandeur of an Egyptian king or queen when setting foot in the room, surrounded by primitive relics and artifacts.
Decorating Technique
Egyptian styling often uses gold and black as primary colors with pale colors and sandstone used subtly in the background. A good choice decorating in Egyptian style is black leather furniture as it has the rich color and sleek texture reminiscent of the Egyptian culture.
Stay away from using light colored wood furniture, or too much wood furniture in general. Think about bronze and gold accented furniture, or sandstone textured furniture, it typically works better with this style.
Depending on the room you’re designing, either a black marble floor, or deep colored hardwood, cherry or dark stain, are good choices. Also can be used marble in your Egyptian room as shelves, tabletops, or décor accents.
Hieroglyphics are often used when decorating with this style. These hieroglyphics are descriptive symbols which the Egyptians used as a form of ancient storytelling. They consist of three kinds of glyphs: phonetic glyphs, including single-consonant characters that functioned like an alphabet; logographs, representing morphemes; and determinatives, or ideograms, which narrowed down the meaning of a logographic or phonetic word.
Writing developed and became more widespread among the Egyptian people, as a result also developed simplified glyph forms, resulting in the priestly and commoner scripts. Hence these variants were also more suited than hieroglyphs for use on papyrus. However hieroglyphic writing was not eclipsed, but existed along side the other forms, especially in monumental and other formal writing.
